# Customer tags

> Tag customers with your own groups, tag them on their profile, and filter the Users list

Customer tags lets you label customers with your own tag groups, such as Tags, Department or Type. You tag customers on their profile, filter the Users list by tag, and can show each group as a column.

**Shows in:** User profile, Users list

## Turn it on

1. Go to **WooCommerce → Powerups** and switch on **Customer tags**.
2. Open the **Tag groups** tab (also linked from the Powerups list).
3. Click **Use these tags** to start with a **Tags** group holding VIP, Wholesale, Retail, Influencer, High value and Support issue, or create your own group.

## Tag groups

On the **Tag groups** tab you can create, rename, reorder and delete groups. Each group has:

* **Group name**, for example "Department".
* **Each customer can have**: **One value** or **Many values**.
* **Staff can add tags while tagging**: on lets staff type new tags on a profile; off keeps a **Fixed list**.

In each group you can add, rename and delete tags. Each tag shows how many customers have it. Tags have no colors, to keep things simple.

Deleting a tag or a group removes it from every customer.

Group and tag names can be up to 100 characters.

Only store managers (people who can manage WooCommerce) see and edit tags on profiles, including their own, and only on users they can edit.

Only registered customers can be tagged. To turn guest orders into accounts, use [Accounts for guest orders](/admin-powerups/guest-accounts).

## On the Users list

* A tag filter above the list, with counts. You can turn it off in Settings.
* One column per group, through [Customer table columns](/admin-powerups/customer-table-columns). Each tag in the column links to the filtered list. The Tag groups tab links there, and tells you to turn it on if it's off.
* [Advanced customer search](/admin-powerups/advanced-customer-search) adds a **Customer tag** search type while this power-up is on.

The tag filter, its counts and the tag columns show only to people who can manage WooCommerce.

## Settings

| Setting | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| **Filter on the Users list** | On | Adds a tag filter above the Users list. |

## Privacy

Tags are included in WordPress's personal data export and removed by its erase tool. Deleted users lose their tags.

A daily background job removes the tags of users who are no longer on the site: deleted, deleted while the power-up was off, or (on multisite) removed from the site.

## Good to know

* On multisite, tags are per site.
* Switching a group from many values to one keeps customers' existing tags until their profile is saved.
* Tag lookups are indexed, so filtering stays fast at any store size.
* Group names can be in any script. Each group also gets a short internal key made from its name, and every key is unique. A name that can't be spelled in Latin letters, such as one in Cyrillic or Chinese, gets the key `group`, then `group_2` and so on.

## Data
