# Email log

> See every WooCommerce email, whether it went out, view it as sent, and resend it

Email log records every WooCommerce email: who got it, when, and whether it went out. You can view each email as it was sent, resend it, and see each order's emails on the order page.

**Shows in:** Log tab, Order page

<Note>
  It logs WooCommerce emails only. It isn't an SMTP plugin and doesn't log other email your site sends.
</Note>

## Turn it on

1. Go to **WooCommerce → Powerups** and switch on **Email log**.
2. Open the **Log** tab (also linked from the Powerups list).

## What's logged

For each email: its type, date, order, To, Cc and Bcc, subject, attachments, and a status:

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Sent** | The mail server accepted it. |
| **Failed** | The mail server didn't accept it. The mail error is shown. |
| **Turned off** | The email is turned off in **WooCommerce → Settings → Emails**. |
| **Not sent** | No recipient address, or WooCommerce skipped it. |
| **Test** | A test sent from [Email preview & resend](/admin-powerups/email-preview). |

**Turned off** and **Not sent** entries are logged only when WooCommerce reports them (WooCommerce 10.9 or newer) and **Also log emails that didn't go out** is on.

Account emails (new account, password reset, email address confirmation and back-in-stock sign-up verification) are logged without their content, because they carry private password or verification links.

## The Log tab

</Frame>

* **Search** by email address, subject or order number.
* **Filter** by email type and status.
* Each row has **View** (opens the email as sent in a window over the list), **Resend** (where possible) and **Delete** (click twice to confirm).
* The viewer doesn't load remote images or other outside content, so images linked from the email don't show there.
* For a test, the details in the viewer include **Sent by**: who sent it.
* The order number opens the order.
* Page numbers and a **Per page** choice (20, 50, 100 or 200) sit below the list. A page number past the end shows the last page; a page number that makes no sense, such as -3, shows the first.

## Resending

**Resend** works for order emails only: not tests, notes, refunds or account emails. It sends the current version of the email to the current recipients and adds an order note.

"Order details" (the invoice or payment email) can always be resent. Other emails that are turned off in **WooCommerce → Settings → Emails** can't.

## The Emails box on orders

Each order gets an **Emails** box with that order's emails and a link to open them in the log.

## Settings

| Setting | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| **Keep emails for (days)** | 30 | Older entries are deleted automatically once a day. 1 to 365 days. |
| **Keep the email content** | On | Lets you view each email as it was sent. It includes customer details, so keep the period short. |
| **Also log emails that didn't go out** | On | Emails turned off in WooCommerce settings, or with no recipient. Answers "why didn't they get it?" |

On very busy stores, the daily clean-up continues in follow-up jobs until old entries are gone.

## Privacy

Logged emails are included in WordPress's personal data export and erase tools, however many emails an address has. They cover emails sent to that address, and store emails about the person's orders and account, such as New order, Cancelled order or Failed order. The tools match whole email addresses only.

The export lists each email's date, title and subject. It adds the content as plain text for emails the person received and for customer emails about their orders, never for account emails. Store emails about their orders are exported without their content.

## Data

| Item | What it is |
| - | - |
| **Settings** | This power-up's saved settings. |
| **Logged emails** | Every entry, including the email content. Deleting removes the log table; it's created again when the power-up is on. |

When you switch the power-up off, the log is kept. Old entries still expire every day and privacy requests still include it, until you delete it here. Deactivating the plugin stops the daily clean-up.
